A Performance Night Out

Saturday 15 December 2012

20:00 - 01:00 @deBoo

Hit Me!

Playful Arts Festival invited designer Kaho Abe over from New York to show her game Hit Me! for the first time in the Netherlands. This IndieCade 2012 Finalist is a two-player hyper-interactive, physical game that tests speed, agility and the ability to take good snapshots. With a helmet and a giant button strapped to your head, you will look great already, but will you be able to take quality snapshots of your opponent?

This highly physical action game creates a new playful form of spectacle and engages the people in play.

As part of the Playful Arts festival, we bring you "A Performance Night Out" on Saturday evening. The evening highlights games and installations that are part spectacle, part performance. The games have been shown around the world at festivals and events.

Join us for a night filled with spectacle games, bringing you toe to toe and head to head with your friends. Collaborate, sneak, team up, challenge, laugh, watch, listen, join.

Special guest: Kaho Abe, designer from New York with her game Hit Me!

Playable for the first time in the Netherlands: Hit Me! and Firefly.

Come play with us and don't forget to bring a friend!

Saturday Night Performance games

Johann Sebastian Joust

Famous in certain circles and played everywhere from the NYC subways to Death Valley, and on top of the Cologne Dom Tower, Johann Sebastian Joust  by Douglas Wilson, is dubbed the new "Folk Game". It has only one basic rule: Don't move your controller faster than the 'music' allows. Opponents will swing at you, you try to dodge, you might make it. Played with up to 7 or even 16 people it makes you look at people next to you in whole new ways, if you have time that is.

Hokra - tournament

Are you ready to face the challenge? Team up with a friend or stranger and work together in this 'digital sports game for four players' by Ramiro Corbetta.  Minimalistic graphics make sure you can focus on the task ahead and defeat the opposite team. Will you be orange or blue? Decide on Saturday night! Team Ultimate, in other words the winning team, will get something special at the end of the evening.

Hokra redefines 'spectator sports' for indie games.

Firefly

Play in the dark gets a whole new meaning with Firefly. We will be taking it outside with this tag and catch game from game designers Chloe Varelidi and Pollie Barden. Teams of players, wearing Flashing LED badges will compete to see who can steal the most badges from the other team's players.

The game explores temporal memory, and exploits the balance of collaboration and competition. Are you a team player?

Cello Fortress

So, Guitar Hero, wasn't that fad over? Here comes Cello He- ehm Fortress! Joost van Dongen (famous for art race game Proun) challenges a team of four players to defend the fortress he is attacking with the strings of his Cello. Sounds simple? We can assure you, it is not. Will Joost be able to create beautiful music while strumming his cello in attack? Let's find out.

Cello Fortress mixes the use of a real instrument with game mechanics, challenging to rethink the space of games.

Playful Arts Festival stimulates the cross-over between different fields of play, interaction and design. Part festival part showcase it celebrates playful culture.

The inaugural edition of the festival focuses on showcasing games that evoke physical and emotional responses by putting the player into action with friends and foes.
